President’s Message

The USO doesn’t save lives. It doesn’t repair damaged bodies or build prosthetics. What we do is enhance the quality of life for countless active duty military members and their families with offerings that might not otherwise be affordable or available to them. Junior enlisted folks do not earn high incomes but are frequently the ones who are called to do the most dangerous work of the military. Long deployments take their toll on all military family members. The USO is there, on military bases, in airports, and in every theater in which there is a conflict. There is no way to gauge the long term impact of our services other than this: Every USO employee has multiple stories of being stopped by grateful service people who express their sometimes tearful appreciation for a hot cup of coffee, a kind word, a Skype opportunity to witness the birth of a new baby, or a holiday party that takes the edge off the absence of a deployed mom or dad. We need them. They need us. We need you. It’s your community and your USO. And we matter to those who need us most.
Sincerely,
Paula Moran
President and CEO

9/11 Tribute Center donates bikes to USS New York
September 11, 2013 This year, the 9/11 Tribute Center’s day of service chose to focus on the children of service members who continue to fight for our freedom. In memory of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, over 600 employees from various companies that held offices in the Twin Towers devoted their time to assembling hundreds of bikes that were then donated to children of active duty service members, including a few stationed here in Norfolk, VA! Sailors serving aboard the USS New York (LPD 21) were specifically chosen because the ship was commissioned in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11. The hull of the USS New York contains several tonnes of steel taken directly from Ground Zero. Strength forged through sacrifice, Never forget!

Supporting USOHRCV means opening your hearts and minds
Not necessarily your wallet

Earlier this month, our center at Richmond International Airport received over 5,000 boxes of cookies donated by the Girl Scouts of the Virginia Commonwealth. This just goes to show that supporting your local USO does not necessarily mean opening you wallet. Donations of goods or services such as snacks and beverages are just as vital to helping us improve the quality of life of the service members living and working in our community as donations of dollars. The next time you visit the commissary or catch a sale at the grocery store, consider picking up just a little extra to donate to your local USO!
